[Weekend Recap for September 24, 2012Vol. 3] A look back of the bigger moments that went down among major promotions in Japan this last weekend from 9/22 to 9/23. We are back on the normal weekend schedule and there is definitely a few points to talk about following this weekends shows. Most notably with both New Japan and All Japan had big shows on Sunday (9/23) with plenty of hype and attention placed upon the IWGP Heavy and Triple Crown Championship matches that were scheduled. ————————————————————————————————————————- [New Japan] New Japan was in full swing in this last week to build up the DESTRUCTION show and the show seemed to have been an early success for NJPW. Hiroshi Tanahashi successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight belt against Naomichi Marufuji to cap off the night and now has a new contender in Minoru Suzuki. Tana and MiSu have previously faced off early this year at Wrestle Kingdom VI. Tanahashi walked out as champion that night, but MiSu was able to pick up the pinfall over Tanahashi during the G1 CLIMAX on August 8th. Just like Marufuji did a couple nights prior when he beat Tanahashi, Suzuki as well called out Tanahashi for a shot at the belt.
~ Speaking of wanting a shot at a belt, Hirooki Goto has his eyes set on reclaiming the IWGP Intercontinental belt from Shinsuke Nakamura after pinning Okada at the 9/23 show. We could see a title match set as early as KING OF PRO WRESTLING on October 8.
~ Karl Anderson still has his eyes set on beating Okada for right to face the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at the Tokyo Dome on January 4. ~ Yujiro Takahashi attacked Tetsuya Naito, mainly Naito’s injured right knee, after their scheduled tag match on 9/23, leaving Naito having to be carried to the back by Anderson & Goto. Naito has had a severe injury to the knee since the G1 CLIMAX and the attack from Yujiro did not help the matter. Nothing official has been released in regards to the severity of the injury, but Naito could be on his way out for a while to recuperate his injured knee.
~ Low Ki has appointed himself the next contender for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title on 9/23. The former champion looks to have his rematch set following his lose of the belt to Ibushi back on 7/29.
~ Lance Archer and Harry Smith continue to stand tall over the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Champions, Tenzan & Kojima, we should expect a title match to be made official soon.
~ KUSHIDA & Alex Shelley picked up the win on 7/23 after KUSHIDA pinned 1/2 of the current IWGP Jr. Tag champions in Alex Koslov. They also finally gave a name to their team as “TIME SPLITTERS”. The TIME SPLITTERS are looking to claim the belts from the FOREVER HOOLIGANS, Romero & Koslov.
~ One match has been set in stone for the KING OF PRO WRESTLING event on October 8 as Togi Makabe & Wataru Inoue will be taking on Kazushi Sakuraba & Katsuyori Shibata. After the udder killing of Hiromu Takahashi in the New Japan ring by Shibata & Sakura, Makabe & Inoue are hoping that their strength together can bring the fight that the invading team wants.
————————————————————————————————————————- [All Japan] Maskatsu Funaki successfully defended the Triple Crown Championship against Suwama on 9/23. After a 27+ minute match, Funaki was finally able to take the match in his favor and drop Suwama head first into the mat with the Hybrid Blaster. This match was a complete 180 from Funaki’s match with Jun Akiyama which only lasted for under 5 mins. For Funaki to prove that he can withstand a long and lengthy match holds much in his favor. Suwama left the ring and was helped out by Masahiro Chono. Could there be something in the works between these two? Definitely an interesting moment. ~ Takao Omori made the bid to be the next challenger for Funaki’s belt.
~ Speaking of Takao Omori, him and Manabu Soya successfully retained the World Tag belts over Joe Doering and Zodiac. Doering and Zodiac proved to be a strong team going into the event, but were unable to beat the champions. Joe Doering snapped after the match, much like he did in late July, and attacked everyone before including his own partner Zodiac. Doering smashed Zodiac with a lariat and then the Revolution Bomb. Joe has not stated any reason for his loss of temper as of late, but it will be hard to see him find a new partner as if they lose they will surely meet his wrath. What’s next for Joe as well as Zodiac?
~ The finals for the All Asian Tag Championship Decision Tournament will be held on 10/21, and the match will see "Junior Stars" Koji Kanemoto & Minoru Tanaka vs. "Tumeric Storm" Tomoaki Honma & Kazushi Miyamoto to crown the new champions. ————————————————————————————————————————- [NOAH] Following a surprise attack from Kohei Sato to Naomichi Marufuji at NOAH’s show on 9/22. Marufuji asked for an apology from ZERO1’s Shinjiro Otani, as Marufuji thought he was friends with the guys there after working on several shows. Or I should say, he thought he was building a strong relationship for both ZERO1 & NOAH. But that brings us to today as Shinjiro Otani has sent out a message for the actions of Sato. Otani said that he was surprised by the actions of Kohei, but it seems that the feelings could not be suppressed any longer. Otani then proceeded to throw gasoline onto the fire and said that “ZERO1” is more or less ready to bring the fight to NOAH. Otani “I will swallow NOAH whole with one shot!”.
Talk about the heel turn moment, but I know most people are familiar with the outside promotions usually coming in as the heels, but the NOAH/ZERO1 relationship going on so far seemed to be more beneficial. Now there is a giant rift in place amongst the two promotions. Whatever will be coming next will be interesting to see.
~ Taiji Ishimori & Atsushi Kotoge made it through 9 other teams to be crowned the 2012 NTV G+ Cup Contention Junior Heavy Tag League Champions. With their win they have earned the right to face the reigning champions Super Crazy & Ricky Marvin on October 8.
~ On 9/22 we saw/heard/read Jun Akiyama take advantage of an injured Takeshi Morishima by making the reigning champion tap to an elevated Boston Crab. It is never a good thing to see the champion lose a match, but to tap a “rookie killer move” like a Boston Crab just adds to the humiliation.
Morishima and Akiyama will meet one on one for the GHC Heavyweight belt on October 8. Will Morishima be able to rectify this lose against Akiyama, or will Akiyama prove that he has something to prove after his quick lose to Masakatsu Funaki?
~ Also announced for the upcoming show on October 8 will see the GHC Heavy tag titles on the line as TNA’s Samoa Joe & Brutus Magnus take on NO MERCY members KENTA & Maybach Taniguchi.
