Akebono is ready to return to the pro wrestling ring after spending almost the last two months out of action due to having acute pneumonia.
There was much talk going around that Akebono might have to retire due to the effects of the illness and the state it put him in. Akebono was said to have suffered from both fatigue and stress after his explosion death match against Atsushi Onita on 8/26 in Yokohama. Two days went after that match and he said that he was having issues sleeping and suffering from shortness of breath.
He would have himself checked into the hospital to undergo tests and it appeared that fluids began filling in both his lungs and his body. Akebono pointed out that his hands swelled up so bad that they looked like boxing gloves.
The doctors who were watching over him said that his heart was working to hard and pressure could becomes a severe issue, due to the water in the lungs. This is when the speculation began that Akebono might be on the verge of retirement, though he himself did not want to retire like this. Akebono would eventually overcome the illness and began walking and weight training to build and repair himself to once again compete.
On October 16, Akebono made his return to confront the last man he faced in the ring with Atsushi Onita and announced that he aims to return by November 16 in ZERO1.
Akebono was forced to relinquish both All Japan’s All Asia Tag Team belts as well as both Heavyweights belts (World & Premium) in ZERO, though he stated that he wants to become #1 in Japan. With that he even announced that he also aims to compete in All Japan’s World Strongest Tag League, which will begin on November 17 and concludes on November 30.
